Starliner's Nokia 9000 Communicator - Page
I have a Nokia 9000 Communicator since Nov'96. You can send me SMS- (+43 676 3038641) and FAX-messages (+43 676 3038643)
and sometimes I also check my EMail (starli@tirol.com) with it. At the moment I use it as a modem for my PC.
Read my opinions about it:
Some negative things:
- You cannot make subdirectories. Everything you write on the Nokia9000 will be placed in ONE
directory called "own texts" - wether SMS, FAX, Notes, EMAIL or even Calendar-Notes. You may guess how many files there
will be in some weeks/months... same problem with the phone/address-database, there's only one
(however, its search function is very nice!)
- The IR-transfer is good for backup and filetransfer, however, when connecting to the Internet (FAXMODEM ..) it's better
to use the cable instead, which will make your calls shorter (and so cheaper)
- the internal calculator only uses +-*/ and () .. no SIN, even no ^ ...
- In EMails, you only have 43 chars/line and you cannot define a signature ...
- Of course: If you ever used a Psion S3a Organizer, the applications from the Nokia9000 aren't
very comfortable and with limited features...
- The Keyboard isn't that good .. sometimes you'll get the character twice, sometimes you'll press on the HELP-Button,
which is directly over the backspace. And yeah, there is NO delete-key and NO page up/down-keys :-(
And some positive ones:
- You can use the Nokia9000 as a normal (fax)-modem from your PC! So for example you can get
newsgropus on your PC or use UUCP or FIDO-mailer on the PC-side.. the manual says it works better
with an IR-connection, but: see above ;-)
- the telephone-features when the Nokia is opened are nice (there's a stop-watch and you can speek
'free' (don't know if this is the correct translation :) )) .. and there exist a good and full-featured protocol
- You can change the fields in the phone(contact)-book and delete or add more fields..
- You can compose your own tune(s) for the phone-RING (however: the alarm-tunes for the calendar
cannot be composed, here you have only a choice of three pre-defined ones...)
- WWW-Pages (saved or in cache memory) can be viewed offline ..
- You can view GIF and JPG-pictures (saved from the WWW or copied from your PC).
- You can install new software. There doesn't exist very much programmes yet, and
the ones I've seen aren't real killer-applications :-(
