Here is a shortcut to each year:

Typical Gaming System
3D is the buzzword of the year (hasn't it been for a few years now?), so you should run a Pentium II 266 as a minimum, and really pair it up with 64 MB or 128 MB of SDRAM. 3D graphics accelerators were everywhere, either as dedicated cards (Voodoo2 arrived this year) or a 2D/3D combo accelerator - your choice of graphics card had more of an impact on gaming performance/frames per second than the CPU you ran. nVidia launched their new NV4-based Riva TNT this year, and it is a top choice. Whatever you choose, be sure it supports DirectX 5 as a minimum, and maybe even DirectX 6 (new this year). For audio, it's an easier decision, as all cards for gaming will be fully Windows 95/98-compatible - that said, output quality still varied massively, so getting a high-end sound card is still something to consider.
