General References on Computer Vision
There are now a variety of textbooks covering basic material in
computer vision. Although the text by Ballard and Brown is now
somewhat out of date, many people still find it occasionally useful.
For a quick survey, we particularly recommend the text by Nalwa.
The texts by Horn and Haralick, Shapiro, and Davies contain more detail on
specific topics e.g. details of algorithms.
- Ballard, Dana H. and Christopher M. Brown (1982) Computer Vision,
Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs NJ (ISBN 0-13-165316-4).
- Davies, E.R. (1997) Machine Vision: Theory, Algorithm, Practicalities
(2nd edition), Academic Press, San Diego. (ISBN: 0-12-206092-X)
- Haralick, Robert M. and Linda G. Shapiro (1992-93) Computer and Robot Vision
(2 volumes), Addison-Wesley, Reading MA (ISBN 0-201-10877-1 and
0-201-56943-4). [First volumne is now out of print.]
- Horn, Berthold K.P. (1986) Robot Vision, MIT Press, Cambridge MA
(ISBN 0-262-08159-8).
- Jain, Ramesh, Rangachar Kasturi, and Brian G. Schunck (1995)
McGraw-Hill, New York (ISBN 0-07-032018-7).
- Nalwa, Vishvjit (1993) A Guided Tour of Computer Vision, Addison-Wesley,
Reading MA (ISBN 1-201-54853-4). [Now out of print.]
Handbooks and textbooks on image processing are frequently useful to
researchers in computer vision. We particularly recommend the books
by Russ and Jahne, which have a practical focus. Their slightly high
pricetags are justified by their numerous and beautiful illustrations.
The Bracewell book is important if you need to understand details of
2D signal processing.
- Bracewell, Ronald N. (1995) Two-Dimensional Imaging, Prentice-Hall,
Englewood Cliffs NJ (ISBN: 0-13-062621-X).
- Bernd Jahne (1997) Practical Handbook on Image Processing for
Scientific Applications, CRC Press, (ISBN 0-8493-8906-2). $85 hardcover,
but has many beautiful plates.
- Richards, John A. (1993) Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis,
second edition, Springer-Verlag, Berlin (ISBN 3-540-58219-3)
- Russ, John C. (1995) The Image Processing Handbook, second Edition,
CRC Press (ISBN 0-8493-2516-1). $95 hardcover, but has many beautiful plates.
