Abstract Algebra

There are many texts in abstract algebra: see your university bookstore. If you can tolerate a very dry presentation style, a standard reference book on abstract algebra, both comprehensive and reasonably readable, is:

• Hungerford, Thomas A. (1974) Algebra, Springer-Verlag, New York.

If you find algebra books rough going, you might first read

• chapter 10 of Daniel Fendel and Diane Resek (1990) Foundations of Higher Mathematics: Exploration and Proof, Addision-Wesley, Reading MA.
• Armstrong, M.A. (1988) Groups and Symmetry, Springer-Verlag, New York.
