PRO-7A (400-2048/59) Installation Faxback Doc. # 7684 SPEAKER PLACEMENT Correct speaker location and position are vital for best performance. The best location as a center speaker for a surround sound system is beneath or on top of your TV/monitor. For a stereo system, place it on a table or on a shelf positioned near a corner of the room. If possible, place the front edge of the PRO-7AV flush with the front edge of the shelf. For best sound, avoid floor locations. (Floor coverings can absorb much of the sound.) We urge you to play a familiar, wide range music selection and experiment with speaker placement until you find a speaker location that sounds the best to you. Stereo speaker placement can be a little tricky. For the best stereo image, the distance between the speakers should be about the same as the distance from the main listening area to a point half way between the speakers. If the distance between the speakers is too large, you might hear a hole in the center of the sound. You can compensate for this by angling the speakers slightly in toward the listening area. CONNECTIONS When you place the speaker in its approximate location, measure the distance from the speaker to the amplifier. Use speaker wire or ordinary 18-gauge lamp cord (zip cord) for distances of 50 feet, or less. For distances greater than 50 feet, use heavier 16-gauge wire. Speaker wire coded with a ridge or stripe on one side makes the connection process easier. Radio Shack stores sell speaker wire to meet most needs. Using the ridge or the stripe on the speaker wire as a guide, connect the speaker's negative (-) terminal to the amplifier's corresponding negative terminal (right, left, or center channel). Then connect the speaker's positive (+) terminal to the amplifier's corresponding positive (+) terminal. This connection procedure is called phasing. Keeping your speakers in proper phase is essential for maximum bass response and overall performance. 1. Remove the insulation from the ends of the wire using a wire stripper. 2. Push down the tab on the speaker's negative (-) terminal and insert one of the wire ends. Release the tab. 3. Push down the tab on the speaker's positive (+) terminal and insert the other wire end. Release the tab. If you are installing two speakers for stereo, repeat this connection process for the right speaker. USING THE RUBBER FEET We provide self-adhesive rubber feet to help you avoid scratching your furniture. You will find two types of rubber feet. Use the thicker ones for the front of the speaker and thinner ones for the back of the speaker. Remove the paper backing and press the feet onto the bottom of the speaker. ADJUSTING THE OPTIMUS BADGE You can adjust the OPTIMUS badge for horizontal or vertical placement. Pull out the badge and rotate it until it clicks stop. MOUNTING THE PRO-7AV Using the screw, you can mount the speaker directly on a wall. Use a #10 or larger screw. You can place PRO-7AV using a speaker stand (Cat. No. 40-2068 or 40-2069) or you can mount the PRO-7AV in a vehicle, on a wall, under a shelf, or on a ceiling, using a special bracket (Cat. No. 40-2067). Follow the instructions provided with the speaker stand or the bracket. (LB/all-09/22/94)
