INSTALLING THE BACKUP BATTERY

To help protect memory information in case of a power failure, install a
9-volt backup battery (not supplied).  For the longest battery life, we
recommend an alkaline battery (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-553).

Follow these steps to install the battery:

1.  Remove the battery compartment cover (located on the bottom of the
    TAD).

2.  Snap the battery into the terminals and place it inside the
    compartment.

3.  Replace the cover.

NOTE:  Replace the battery when the LOW BATT indicator lights.

INSTALLING CASSETTES

The system includes two microcassettes - an MC-15 (outgoing announcement)
and an MC-60 (incoming message) cassette.  Install both cassettes for
proper operation.

Follow these steps to install the cassettes:

1.  Turn the cassettes' hubs with a pencil to take up any tape slack.

2.  Open the cassette compartment.

3.  With the open edges of the cassettes toward the front and the full
    reels to the right, install the MC-15 cassette into the OUTGOING
    compartment and the MC-60 cassette into the INCOMING compartment.

4.  Close the cassette compartment.

NOTES:  You can buy additional cassettes or cassettes, of a different
        length at your local Radio Shack store.

        Replace both cassettes at least once a year - more often if you
        use them heavily.

CONNECTING TO THE PHONE LINE AND POWER

Follow these steps to connect the TAD to the phone line and AC power.

1.  Insert the TAD's modular plug into a modular phone jack.

    If the phone line jack is not a modular jack, you must update the
    wiring.  You can convert the wiring yourself, using jacks and adapters
    available at your local Radio Shack store.  Or, you can have the phone
    company update the wiring for you.

NOTE:  The phone company will charge you for the installation of the
       necessary jacks.  They also will ask you for the USOC number of the
       jack to be installed.  This number is RJ11C.

2.  If you want to connect the TAD and your phone to the same jack, use a
    duplex adapter (available at your local Radio Shack store).

3.  Plug the supplied AC adapter into the TAD's DC 9V jack.  Route the
    adapter's cord through the strain-relief slot.  Then plug the adapter
    into a standard AC outlet.

CAUTION:  To protect the TAD and the adapter, you must use a Class II,
          120V/9V DC adapter, such as the supplied adapter.  It must
          deliver at least 350 milliamps (but no more that 450 milliamps),
          its center tip must be set to negative, and its plug must
          correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack.
