Hi-Pwr 7-Band EQ/Booster (120-1972) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6948 Before you install the equalizer/booster, carefully read all installation instructions. If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, we recommend that you have a professional install the equalizer/booster. Note the following before you begin installing the equalizer/booster: * Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. * If you connect front and rear speakers to the equalizer/booster, each speaker must have an impedance of 8 ohms or more. If you connect only one pair of speakers, each speaker must have an impedance of 4 ohms or more and you must connect the speakers to the front speaker harness. * Before you mount the equalizer/booster, temporarily connect the equalizer/booster. Do not mount the equalizer/booster until you are sure the connections work. SUPPLIED HARDWARE The following items are supplied with the equalizer/booster. Be sure you locate these items before you throw away the packing materials. U-Shaped Universal Bracket (1) Machine Screws (4) Small Flat Washers (4) Large Flat Washers (4) Small Spring Washers (4) Sheet-Metal Screws (4) Large Spring Washers (4) 10-Amp Fuse (1) CHOOSING A MOUNTING LOCATION Choose a mounting location that: * Is as close as possible to your vehicle's radio/cassette player or other main auto-sound component * Does not interfere with the vehicle's operation * Is not directly in front of a heating vent * Lets you drill mounting holes without damaging other vehicle components. * Allows enough leg room for passengers * Lets you conveniently and safely route wires CONNECTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER To hook up the equalizer/booster, connect the wires and install the correct fuses. Caution: To protect your vehicle's electrical system, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal before you connect the equalizer/booster. (This disconnects power from the vehicle's clock, auto sound system's tuner memories, and any other clock or memory devices in the vehicle. You must later reset these.) Connecting the Wires Place the equalizer/booster as close as possible to the selected mounting location. Then route the wires and temporarily connect the equalizer/- booster. 1. Connect the equalizer/booster's white/white-black (left) and gray/gray -black (right) "Speaker Level In" wires to the radio/cassette player's "Speaker Output (L/R)" or Line Out (L/R) wires. 2. Connect the equalizer/booster's black GND (ground) wire to a chassis ground, such as a clean metal bolt attached to the vehicle's frame. Be sure the bolt is not insulated from the frame by a plastic part. 3. Connect the red power wire with a 10 amp fuse to the vehicle's fuse block that turns on and off with the ignition. Note: Use a wire tie to keep the harness' red power wire separated from the rest of the wires on the equalizer/booster and other wires in the mounting area. This connection provides power to the equalizer/booster when you turn on the ignition, and turns off power when you turn off the ignition. This prevents your vehicle's battery from being drained if you leave on the equalizer/booster when you turn off the ignition. 4. Connect the equalizer/booster's white/white-black (left) and gray/gray -black (right) front speaker wires to the front speakers 5. If you want to connect rear speakers to the equalizer/booster, connect them to the equalizer/booster's green/green-black (left) and violet/- violet-black (right) rear speaker wires. Connecting the Equalizer/Booster with RCA-Type Line Output Jacks If the existing auto-sound component (radio or cassette player) has RCA -type line output jacks, connect the radio/cassette player's line outputs to the equalizer/booster's RIGHT IN and LEFT IN jacks using shielded cables with RCA-type plugs. (Connect left to left and right to right.) Testing the Connections After you connect the wires, reconnect the cable to the vehicle's negative (-) terminal. Test the equalizer/booster to be sure the connections are correct. MOUNTING THE EQUALIZER/BOOSTER After you test the equalizer/booster and are sure everything operates properly, disconnect the cable from the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal, and disconnect the equalizer/booster. Then mount the equalizer/booster as follows. 1. Temporarily attach the mounting bracket to the equalizer/booster. 2. Position the equalizer/booster in the mounting position. Mark the position for the mounting bracket on the mounting surface by tracing the outside edges of the mounting bracket. Note: before drilling any holes make sure you will not damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 3. Remove the mounting bracket from the equalizer/booster, and position it as marked on the mounting surface. Then trace the positions for the mounting holes. 4. Drill l5/32-inch holes where you traced the mounting hole positions. Be sure you do not damage anything on the other side of the mounting surface. 5. Attach the mounting bracket to the mounting surface as shown using the supplied sheet-metal screws, large spring washers, and large flat washers. 6. Attach the equalizer/booster to the mounting bracket as shown using the supplied machine screws, small spring washers, and small flat washers. 7. Reconnect the cable to the vehicle battery's negative (-) terminal. (smm 03/04/94)
