VSS-100 (490-2500) Installation Faxback Doc. # 6606 Mount the camera and connect the monitor to the camera as described in this section. Note: The system is designed for indoor use only. MOUNTING THE CAMERA Select a location for the camera that meets the following requirements: * Has a clear view of the area you want to monitor. * Is free from dust, rain, or moisture. * Is not close to main power lines or transformers. * Stays between 14 degrees F and 122 degrees F. Then, refer to the following for the method best suited for the selected location, and mount the camera as follows: 1. Use the mounting base as a template to mark the positions for the mounting holes. 2. Select screws that are appropriate for the mounting surface. (The supplied screws are appropriate only for solid wood surfaces.) Then, use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the selected screws to drill the mounting holes. 3. Use the appropriate screws to secure the mounting base to the desired location. 4. Screw the L-bracket into the mounting base. 5. Remove the thumbscrew assembly from the L-bracket, and screw it into the camera. Then, tighten the lock nut to securely attach the thumbscrew assembly to the camera. 6. Mount the camera on the L-bracket. Tighten the thumbscrew to secure the camera to the L-bracket. CONNECTING THE MONITOR Follow these steps to connect the monitor to the camera. 1. Route the supplied cable from the camera to the monitor. The cable should not run parallel to any power lines. 2. Plug the cable into the monitor's CAMERA jack and into the camera's MONITOR jack. 3. Plug the monitor's power cord into a standard AC outlet. MONITORING Press POWER to turn on the camera and monitor. After a brief warm-up period, the picture appears on the monitor. Turn VOLUME to adjust the sound level. To adjust the camera's angle, loosen the thumbscrew and swivel the camera. Then, tighten the thumbscrew. Turn the camera's focus adjustment ring to adjust the focus. For the best picture, do not aim the camera at any light source. Caution: Never aim the camera directly at the sun or any other bright light - not even through windows specially coated to block out sunlight. Bright light can damage the camera. Press POWER to turn off the camera and monitor. ADJUSTING THE MONITOR'S CONTROLS Turn CONTRAST to adjust the difference between the dark and light parts of the picture. Turn V-HOLD to adjust the vertical alignment of the picture. The following controls are set at the factory and seldom require any adjustments. However, if necessary, you can use a screwdriver to fine tune them: * Turn BRIGHT to darken or lighten the picture. * Turn H-HOLD to adjust the horizontal alignment. * If the picture does not fill the screen from top to bottom, adjust V.LIN and V.SIZE on the back of the monitor. ADJUSTING THE CAMERA'S CONTROLS The camera's controls are set at the factory and seldom require any adjustments. However, if necessary, you can use a screwdriver to fine tune the following controls: * BEAM affects the contrast. * FOCUS affects the clarity. * TARGET affects the picture's brightness. OPERATING WITH A VCR If you connect a VCR to your system, you can record what the camera sees and hears. You can play back the recording on the monitor or on your TV. Connection to a VCR requires a special cable (Radio Shack Cat. No. T49-2510), which is available through special order through your local Radio Shack store. A special 100-foot extension cable (Cat. No. T49-2520) is also available through special order through your local Radio Shack store. Connections Plug the cable's modular plug into the monitors VCR's jack. Then, connect the cable's phono plugs to the VCR's in/out jacks. Recording Follow these steps to record on a VCR. 1. Turn on the VCR and select the VCR'S audio/video inputs. 2. Press POWER to turn on the monitor. 3. Set the monitor's VCR switch to RECORD. 4. Adjust the monitor's VOLUME control. 5. To test for proper operation, turn on the TV connected to your VCR. The TV should show the same image that is seen through the camera lens. 6. Begin recording as described in your VCR's owner's manual. Note: The horizontal resolution of this system is not as fine as a normal TV. The picture quality is not the same as what you see during a regular broadcast. Playback Follow these steps to play back a recording on the monitor. 1. Turn on the VCR and select the VCR's audio/video inputs. 2. Press POWER to turn on the monitor. 3.
