DMP 205 (260-2904) Front Panel Controls Faxback Doc. # 5732 You can control many of the printer's functions directly from the DMP 205's front panel, which consists of four buttons and four indicators. The buttons' basic functions are described below; more detailed information follows later in this section. -ON/OFF LINE, PITCH: Sets the printer on line so it is ready to receive data from the computer, or sets it off line so you can adjust printer functions. It also sets the printer to the pitch-setting mode. See "Setting the Character Pitch." -LF/FF, ->: Advances the paper one line or to the top of the next page in the off-line mode. In the pitch-set or font-set modes, -> moves the print head to the right. -HIGH SPEED, FONT, <-: Sets or cancels the HS (high speed) mode when the printer is on line. In off line mode, FONT sets the printer to the font-selection mode (see "Selecting the Font"). In the pitch set or font-set modes, <- moves the print head to the left. To enable DC1/DC3 codes (select/deselect printer), press this button while turning on the printer. For more details, refer to "Appendix B: Control Sequence Summary." -CUT, PARK, SET: In the on line mode, properly aligns the perforation to the tear-off position so you can tear off the paper more easily. In the off-line mode, PARK moves fanfold paper to the parked position. This feature lets you use single-sheet paper without removing the fanfold paper from the printer. In the pitch-set or font-set modes, SET stores the selected setting into memory. INDICATORS The following chart shows the meaning of the front panel indicators. INDICATOR ON OFF FLASHING POWER POWER IS ON. POWER IS OFF ------- ON/OFF LINE Printer is on line Printer is offline The printer is and ready to print and not ready to on pitch-set or print. font-set mode; or, The print- head is too hot Printing auto- matically resumes when the print head cools HIGH SPEED HS MODE NORMAL MODE ---------- PAPER OUT No paper in the ---------- An error condition printer has occurred. Turn the printer off and back on. USING ON/OFF LINE To set the printer so it is ready to receive data from the computer, press ON/OFF LINE so the ON/OFF LINE indicator lights. To adjust the printer or paper, press ON/OFF LINE so the ON/OFF LINE indicator is not lit. The printer goes off line when a paper-out error occurs. To continue printing when this happens, press ON/OFF LINE. The printer goes on line and prints one more line, and then it stops and goes off line again. If the printer buffer contains no data when you attempt to print one more line, the printer stays on line until you input one line of data to the printer. During the self test, pressing ON/OFF LINE pauses the test. To select the Hex Dump mode, press ON/OFF LINE while turning on the printer. See "Using the HEX Dump Feature." USING LINE FEED AND FORM FEED To advance the paper one line (line feed), press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer off line. then press LF/FF. To advance to the top of the next page (form feed), press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer off line. Then press and hold down LF/FF until the paper starts to advance. SELECTING THE PRINT MODE You can use the front panel to select one of the following print modes. Once you set the print mode or font by the front panel method, any print mode or font setting control codes sent from the computer have no effect on the printing. If you want to change the print mode or font through your application software or by sending control codes from your computer, use the front panel to reset the font/print mode to the CODE setting. -LQ (LETTER-QUALITY): Higher resolution than the other modes but slower. You can select one of eight specific fonts - Roman, Sans, Serif, Courier, Prestige, Script, OCR-B Orator and Script C. See "Selecting the LQ Font." -SSD (Super-Speed-Draft): Same resolution as draft mode, but print speed is 50% faster (240 characters per second.) The print is compressed: characters print in a 8 by 19 matrix in SSD, compared to a 12-by-19 matrix in 10 cpi standard draft mode. All print attributes (bold, etc.) are ignored in this mode. -HS (HIGH SPEED): When the printer is online, pressing HIGH SPEED selects or deselects HS (High Speed) printing. The HIGH SPEED indicator turns on when this mode is selected and turns off when it is deselected. HS printing is primarily for checking page layout in the LQ mode. Selecting the HS mode has no effect on printing speed or quality in the draft mode. In the LQ mode, selecting the HS mode cancels the LQ mode, and the printer prints all test and graphics bidirectionally for faster output. LQ (letter quality) characters and 180/360 dpi (dots per inch) graphics print at 180 dpi in the HS mode. NOTES: -Graphics or characters with special attributes (superscript/subscript, for example) might not print the same in the HS mode as they would in the LQ mode. Also, if you print graphics intermixed with text in HS mode, some text might print over some of the graphics. SELECTING THE LQ, DRAFT, OR SSD PRINTING MODE You can select a specific LQ font (Roman, Sans Serif, Courier, Prestige, Script, OCR-B Orator, Script-C) or the draft or SSD printing mode by following the steps below. You can also use software to send the appropriate control codes. See Appendix B for a listing of the control codes which select the font through software. To select an LQ font or the draft or SSD printing mode, do the following. 1. Be sure the printer is off line (the ON/OFF LINE indicator is off). 2. Press and hold FONT until the ON/OFF LINE indicator flashes. 3. The printer cover has labels for the fonts available on the DMP 205 and the Draft and SSD printing modes. Press -> or <- to move the print head until it is next to the label for the font/printing mode you wish to select. (The default font is Roman.) 4. Press SET to select the font/printing mode. 5. Press ON/OFF LINE to set the printer on line. SCALABLE FONTS The two scalable fonts - Roman and Sans Serif - can be set to any point size between 8 and 32 in two-point increments. You use control codes to select the point size. For details, see Appendix B "Control Sequence Summary." (smc-12/06/93)
