60 MB Tape Drive (250 -4079) Installations Faxback Doc. # 5587 This section provides step-by-step instructions for installing the tape drive in Tandy 3000, 4000 series, and 5000 family of computers. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS To install and use the internal tape drive, your computer must meet the following criteria. Tandy 3000/4000/5000 series family of PC compatible computers One half-height, 5 1/4" installation bay available IMPORTANT NOTE: In certain cases, it is necessary to set a termination jumper on the tape drive. Please read the following discussion before installing the internal tape drive. Set the jumpers to the terminated position if the diskette drive in your computer is not terminated. If you remove one diskette drive to install the tape drive, either the remaining diskette drive or the tape drive must be terminated. Refer to your computer's installation guide for information on diskette drive termination. The tape drive is shipped unterminated. NOTE: In most cases it is unnecessary to terminate the tape drive when it is installed internally in computers with only one diskette drive. To terminate the tape drive, gently pull the termination jumper blocks off the pins. Line up the holes in the jumper blocks with all six pins and gently push them on as far as they will go. INSTALLING THE TAPE DRIVE CAUTION: Carefully observe the procedure outlined in your computer's manual concerning power and electrical disconnection before installing the tape drive. 1. The tape drive can be installed in three different types of Tandy computers. Before installing the tape drive, find you computer model on Table 2-1 and identify its chassis type. Follow the installation instructions that apply to that chassis type. 2. Turn off your computer and all externally attached devices. If your computer has a key lock, unlock it and remove the key. 3. Remove the cover mounting screws, and then remove the cover as detailed in your computer's manuals. 3. Select an installation bay in which to install the tape drive. Remove the installation bay cover plate from your computer's cover. Refer to your computer owner's manual for detailed instructions. NOTE: If you remove diskette drive B to install the tape drive, change the System Configuration to indicate that diskette drive B is not installed. NOTE: Steps 5 and 6 apply only to Type A chassis computers. 5. Locate the right-angle bracket and screws supplied with the tape drive. Attach the right-angle bracket to the right side of the tape drive using the supplied screws. 6. Slide the tape drive into the 5 1/4" drive bay. Align the drive and bracket mounting holes with the holes in the drive tower. Secure the tape drive with the three remaining screws. NOTE: Steps 7 and 8 apply only to Type B chassis computers. 7. If your computer has a Tandy Type B chassis, pull the rails from the selected installation bay and install them on the tape drive. Note the rail mounting holes used and install both ground contacts as shown. 8. After installing the rails on the tape drive, slide the tape drive into the selected installation bay. NOTE: Steps 9 through 14 apply only to Type C chassis computers. 9. You must remove the drive tower from the computer to install the tape drive. Pull the battery from the hook-and-loop fastener on the drive tower. Note all power and data cable connections to drives in the drive tower and then detach these cables. Stand the computer on its side so that the drive tower screws on the underside and the three screws on the front of the computer. Gently remove the drive tower. 10. Select an installation bay for the tape drive. Press one rubber grommet into each of the four mounting holes in the drive tower for that installation bay. Slide that tape drive into the selected installation bay ensuring that it is right side up. Align the hole in one grommet with one hole in the tape drive mounting bracket and install the screw. Repeat the process for the other 3 screws. 11. Re-install the drive tower and attach cables to all devices in the drive tower except for the tape drive. 12. Locate the ground strap supplied with the tape drive. Remove the front-left screw from the power supply cage and use it to secure the circle lug on the tape drive ground strap. Attach the other end of the ground strap to the ground lug on the tape drive. 13. Remove the diskette drive data cable from the diskette controller noting the location of pin 1 on the data cable. Locate the diskette drive data cable supplied with the tape drive. Carefully press the header connector on this cable onto the connector pins on the diskette controller in your computer. Make sure pin 1 on the cable connector aligns with pin 1 on the cable connector aligns with pin 1 on the diskette controller. 14. Take the card edge connector at the end of the new data cable and press it onto the date connector on the diskette drive in your computer. This connector is keyed to help you install it correctly. Attach the remaining connector on the data cable to the tape drive, twisting the cable. This connector is also keyed to help you install it properly. NOTE: The remaining installation steps apply to all chassis types. 15. Take one of the power cables from your computer's power supply and plug it into the power connector on the tape drive. 16. Locate the ribbon data cable that is connected to the diskette drive and the diskette controller. This cable has a free edge connector near the diskette drive end. Push the free connector of the diskette data cable onto the data connector at the rear of the tape drive. These connectors are keyed to help you orient them properly. 17. Make sure all internal cables are out of the way and then replace the computers cover and cover hardware. 18. Refer to the Software Installation section beginning on page 2-12 in the Tandy 60 MB Tape Backup User Guide to install the backup system software. (smm 08/03/93)
