Word Processor Downloads
The programs on this page are to be used at your own risk. They are made available here on the basis that they are considered 'abandonware' by their original authors, or the authors' policy on reproduction is permitted.
Most of these download files are compressed with 7zip (.7z), and within them may contain raw disk images in .IMG format. To extract the data from the image files use WinImage.
Where downloads are greyed-out it means there are copies around on the internet but I have not secured permissions to use DOS Days as a download repository for that application or utility.

Microsoft Word
Word 1983 Microsoft released the first version of Microsoft Word for DOS on the IBM PC. It is a character cell / text mode based application, but can make use of a Microsoft mouse - which had also just been released. DisplayWrite 4 The DisplayWrite 4 installer is very picky about hardware configuration. It does not run properly in DOSBox. It can get confused about free drive space if you are using a hard drive larger than around 32mb (the limit at the time). It also expects a Microsoft Serial, Microsoft Bus, Visi-On serial, or Mouse Systems serial mouse. It does not support PS/2 mice and does not utilize the MOUSE.COM dos driver. You can download the original manuals here. |

DisplayWrite 5 This appears to be the final DOS version of DisplayWrite. There is also a DisplayWrite 5/2 for OS/2, just as there was a DisplayWrite 4/2. It is still a text-mode program, but there is a seperate DisplayWrite Composer program that provides graphical previewing. |
